It has been a while since I have babysat so I needed to post something. Recently I was reminded of one evening babysitting a year or so ago.
The two girls and I, one 4 and the other 1 1/2 or 2. We were playing in the backyard. The parents came out to say their goodbyes to the girls and they left. The girls and I played for 30 more minutes before I decided it was time to go in the house and have dinner.
We walked to the backdoor I turned the handle and pushed... nothing. They have a pretty tricky door so I thought "Oh, I'm not pushing hard enough." So I turn and push even harder... nothing. I brased myself and pushed as hard as I could, feet sliding all over the place. I pushed on the door, I knew it had been dead bolted. I let the little 4 year old try because she said she could open the door. I check in and under things on the porch for a key... nothing. We tried for several minutes. I kept thinking I was crazy because they would never lock us out. The funny thing was that the dogs were inside and we were outside.
I had no way of getting in. We walked around front, me holding the 2 year old, resting her on my hip and holding the hand of the 4 year old. Of course the front door wasn't unlocked and the garage didn't have a keypad. And I had nothing on me, my phone was in the house with my purse which is where we should have been, having dinner.
They have one good neighbor and one bad neighbor. I asked the 4 year old to check and make sure which one the good neighbor was so we could use their phone. I rang the door bell and had to explain to the woman who answered the door, she was actually their grandma to the kids that lived there. So the girls went off to play while I used her phone trying to think of any phone numbers and none were coming.
I was in full on panic, it is dinner time and the girls are going to starve. The parents are at some event and won't get back till late. What are they going to think if I can't get a hold of anyone and we have to stay here till they get home. Yeah, that will go over great. They come home to an empty house, my car still parked out front, the dogs in the house but none of us to be found. Yeah, I wouldn't be hired back. So I borrowed the woman's phone and dialed.
I called my own mom to see if she could give me any phone numbers, she didn't have any. The grandma there said that her daughter had a phone book and it had the mom's number on it. So I called her... no answer. I left a voice message and tried again after about 30 minutes of try and not succeeding. I remembered that their mom had told me a long time ago that her husbands number was the same except for the last digit. It was either one less or one more, I tried both. First I left a message then I tried the other number, bingo!! I had finally got a hold of someone! He gave me their grandmothers number who lived about 10 minutes away. I called her she was on her way to a meeting and had gotten a flat tire but she called someone else and said that they would drive over and let me in.
We waited in the front yard and played a game so we would be sure not to miss the friend who was going to let us in. We waited for about 15 minutes and finally we were let in. It had been an almost an hour and a half past dinner so I quickly rummaged through the fridge to find something to feed them.
I kept telling them "Oh what an adventure we just had!"
I checked the backdoor after finding something for the girls to eat. Yep, it had been locked. We were locked outside and I wasn't crazy. (that was good to know.)
A little while later I was reading the girls their bed time story when we heard the parents get in. The girls went running into the kitchen saying "Daddy, you locked us out." I had to explain to them the story and the girls added where needed. Turned out the mom had accidentally locked us out. It gave a good laugh.
Now I take my phone with me when I go outside with kids just in case so I will have a phone and numbers with me.
